The Ministry of Justice is one of the largest government departments. Every year around 9 million people use its services in 900 locations across the United Kingdom, including 650 courts and tribunals and 139 prisons in England and Wales.

It has a budget of £9.2 billion and around 95,000 people across the United Kingdom.

The Ministry of Justice works to protect the public and reduce reoffending, providing a more effective, transparent and responsive criminal justice system for victims and the public. It also provides fair and simple routes to civil and family justice.

The Ministry of Justice’s creation on 9 May 2007 brought together, for the first time, responsibility for the entire justice system – the courts, prison and probation services. It works in partnership with the other government departments and agencies to reform the criminal justice system to serve the public and support the victims of crime. It is also responsible for making new laws, strengthening democracy, modernising the constitution and safeguarding human rights.
