Office of the Public Guardian
The OPG is an agency with responsibilities that extend across England and Wales (separate arrangements exist for Scotland and for Northern Ireland).
It supports the Public Guardian in the registration of Enduring Powers of Attorney (EPA) and Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA), and the supervision of deputies appointed by the Court of Protection.
It also helps attorneys and deputies to carry out their duties, and protects people who lack the mental capacity to make decisions for themselves.
It works closely with other organisations to ensure that any allegations of abuse are fully investigated and acted on.
The OPG also has responsibility for mental capacity policy, and provides guidance to public, legal and health professionals.
The OPG produces two newsletters:

- MCA Update for stakeholders, on Mental Capacity Act policy.

Last week OPG issued a number of letters to people regarding outstanding monies in connection with applications to register a Lasting Power of Attorney.
Unfortunately due to a processing error, it appears that a significant number of these letters have been sent to the wrong address. We are urgently investigating the root cause of this error and apologise unreservedly for any distress or inconvenience caused.
OPG will write again to all concerned, both to apologise and to provide correct advice. In the meantime, if you believe you have received a misdirected letter, we would ask that you disregard it and await a correct replacement. These will be issued before the Christmas break.
Important information if you are sending an application to register an Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney on or after 1st October 2011
From the 1st October 2011 the LPA/EPA Application to Register Fee will be increasing from £120 to £130.
This increase follows the Governments recent response to proposals on changes to the Office of the Public Guardian fees. A new fees remission policy will also come in to force and be available from the 1st October 2011.
