Royal and constitutional
This includes responsibility for constitutional matters, devolution and electoral reform. Responsibility for the Electoral Commission, IPSA, and the Boundary Commissions has also transferred to the Cabinet Office.
The content below relates to the Ministry of Justices former responsibilities for this area.
Responsibility for royal matters originates with the ancient office of the king's secretary.
This was the channel of approach to the king for those subjects who had no right of access to the sovereign. Despite the historical transformation of the role, many of the original secretary's duties continue to fall to the Lord President of the Council and Deputy Prime Minister.
We have an interest in the relationship between the State and the Church of England, the sovereignty of Parliament and rules of succession to the Crown.
