Note on Statistics Terminology
Listed below are broad definitions of the terms used in the statistics section of this website.
Statutory basis: the legislation under which the tribunal/inquiry operates, or was established
Description: brief outline of the purpose of the tribunal/inquiry
Jurisdiction: the parts of the UK in which the tribunal/inquiry has the authority to operate
Judicial Pool: number of chairmen and members (full and part time) available to conduct the work of the tribunal/inquiry
Days Sat: total number of days that judiciary sat to consider appeals/applications during the period
Receipts: new appeals/applications submitted during the period
Withdrawn: appeals/applications settled or withdrawn before a final judgment was required
Decided: final determinations made by judiciary within the period
Outstanding: undecided appeals/applications (including rescheduled and adjourned hearings) on the tribunal/inquiry's books at the end of the period
Success Rate: percentage of 'decided' cases where decision went in favour of appellant/applicant in part or in whole
Oral Hearings: percentage of 'decided' cases that were determined via an oral hearing (as opposed to a 'paper' or 'ex parte' hearing)
Waiting Times: information about the average or expected time taken from receipt of appeal/application to completion of case
