Legal aid: reforming advocates graduated fees

This consultation paper sets out proposals to bring the rates paid to advocates for defence work more in line with the rates paid by the Crown Prosecution Service. We are aiming to save £50m from advocates fees in order to contribute towards overall efficiency savings.

The consultation has been reopened until 12.00 on Thursday 1 April 2010. This is to allow us to clarify our plans to consult on a possible pilot of a single graduated fee and enable comments and/or further information to be provided in relation to equalities impact. A letter has been issued to all consultees.

Response
The response to the consultation sets out the decision to reduce advocates fees over the next three years and explains how the Legal Services Commission (LSC) will deal with very high cost (crime) cases from July 2010.
