HMP Cardiff is a Category B Local/Training Prison, holding male adult prisoners who are drawn predominantly from the surrounding court catchment area in South East Wales.
HMP Cardiff holds a reducing number of life sentenced men. Arrangements are made to facilitate moves to establishments best able to meet long-term needs.

Reception criteria: HMP Cardiff accepts male 18+ remanded into custody from the courts in its catchment area.
Regime: Cardiff’s regime includes full time education, employment in the prison workshops and training courses. There is a resettlement unit that offers prisoners various offending behaviour programmes and work based courses and a detoxification unit also holds short term prisoners in preparation for release.
