Deerbolt Prison

Deerbolt is a purpose built Young Offenders Institution, which opened in 1973 built on a former Army Camp. It is situated on the outskirts of Barnard Castle in County Durham.

Deerbolt is a Category C Young Offenders Establishment that caters for approximately 500 males young offenders  between the ages of 18 – 21, generally serving sentences up to 4 years in length.

Reception criteria: Deerbolt is the young offender institution for men from the North East of England and Humberside. The prison also receives men from the North West, Yorkshire and other parts of the north. The young offenders are serving up to a maximum of 4 years.  (Up to 5 years provided in last 12 months - to be discussed with Duty Governor). Longer sentences (in last 12 months) – to be discussed with Governor or Deputy). Sec 53/2 should have a Movement Order. Prisoners with outstanding or further court appearances not accepted without prior discussion with Duty Governor.
