Regime information for Dovegate Prison
Education: The education department has space for 126 prisoners to receive part time (17.5 hours per week) education in classes operating 5 days per week with evening classes every weekday. Activities range from basic skills to Open University. There is an option for prisoners to gain teaching qualifications through learning support assistant jobs. The library has over 10,000 books which are rotated at a rate of 25% per year.
The education department offers vocational training including, painting and decorating, horticulture, building and electrical skills and industrial cleaning.
Workshops: A wide range of industrial work including light engineering, packing and other manual activity. The employment clerk allocates employment during induction and a minimum of 12 weeks must be spent in each job before a change of labour will be granted. The average wage is £21.
Healthcare: A 24- hour primary healthcare facility operates at the prison with a full time medical officer. There are regular clinics by a dentist, chiropodist optician and psychiatrist.
Gymnasium: There is a large gymnasium with a well- equipped weights room. In addition there are 2 5-a-side floodlit polygrass football pitches. Each prisoner is allocated a minimum of two 1 hour sessions per week. A qualification programme is being developed, likely to include BAWLA, CSLA and NVQ qualifications.
Chaplaincy: Full time Church of England Chaplain, Full time Islamic minister, Part time Methodist and Roman Catholica ministers plus visiting Jewish, Buddhist and Sikh ministers. There is a dedicated place of worship with Christian and multi-faith areas.
Muslim prayers take place each Friday, RC each Saturday and C of E each Sunday. Bible study group every Wednesday and Islamic study group on Monday afternoon also the Imam is available Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings on the wings to deal with faith specific issues.
Prison Shop: The prison operates a ‘bag and tag' system allowing prisoners to shop twice a week. A wide range of stock is held and shopping can also be done via a range of catalogues. Private cash arrangements are as per the IEP system.
Therapeutic Community: This is a discrete facility located on the same site as Dovegate main prison and sharing some of the main prison services eg healthcare, gymnasium, visitors centre. It has a CNA and operating capacity of 200 of which 15% may be Cat C.
Half day in Therapy groups or community meetings. Other half in education or work. Business studies, printing and publishing, IT, basic skills, ceramics and art, horticulture and catering to NVQ level 3. Open university courses are also undertaken.
