All you need is:

  • the name and date of birth of the person you are visiting
  • their prisoner number.

You can choose up to 3 possible dates and times. Prison booking staff will check what's available and confirm your visit by email. 

If you've made an online visit booking request and haven't received a confirmation email within 1-3 working days, please email SocialVisitsGuysMarsh@hmps.gsi.gov.uk or call 01747 856586, lines open Mon-Thurs 13.00-15.00 and Fri 11.30-13.00. 

Additional information: The prison has a visitors centre that opens between 12.30 and 14.45 and provides toilets and baby changing facilities. Disabled facilities and tea and coffee are also available, however only loose change can be accepted. The visits canteen sells a wide range of refreshments and snacks. Adult visitors will be limited to £30 maximum when entering the Prison to enable the purchase of refreshments.

Additional information: Visitors must bring letter of introduction and valid form of ID.

How to get there:

HMP Guys Marsh is located in a quiet rural location in the county of Dorset about two miles from the hilltop town of Shaftesbury.

Bus: Buses travel from across the county: please make enquiries via your local bus station. A taxi will be required for the remainder of your journey from the town.

Train: The nearest station is Gillingham (Dorset). A taxi will be required for the rest of the journey.

A bus service is provided by the Friends of Guys Marsh on Saturdays from the station to the prison, at a cost of £2 per adult return. Please book seats for this bus when booking your visit. Help with the cost of travel for visitors may also be available from the Assisted Prison Visits scheme (0845 300 1423). The lines are open 10.15-13.45 and 14.15-15.45.

Car: Guys Marsh lies on the B3091 Shaftesbury to Sturminster Newton road, approximately two miles from the town. Shaftesbury lies on the main A30 Salisbury to Yeovil road (running east-west) and the A350 Warminster to Poole road (running north-south)

Parking: Free car parking is available at Guys Marsh. The visitors car park is clearly signposted from the main road.
