The Visits Centre is open daily for visitors to book in from 09:00 for Legal and Closed visits. For social visits, the visits centre is open for booking in at 13:15 daily.

It is suggested that you attend the Visits Centre 45 minutes prior to your visit for domestic and category A visits. If you do not book in at the requested time, it is possible that your visit will not be allowed to commence.

When visiting the establishment, you will need to bring 1 piece of photo identification (such as driver’s license, passport or citizen card).  If you do not have photo identification, you will be required to provide 2 forms of ID from the following list:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Bank card plus bank statement
  • Employee Pass
  • Student ID card
  • Rent card
  • Young Person’s Proof of Age Card
  • Benefits Book

People attending the establishment for visits should make themselves aware of the dress code.  The following will not be accepted: ripped/distressed jeans, football shirts, see-through or revealing tops including tops that are low-cut, uniforms (except school uniform). Property can be handed in at the Visits Centre from 09:00 to 10:30 hours.  Please bring photo identification when handing in property.

Booking information: Initial Reception Visit can be booked directly on 0161 817 5655. Additional visits are then booked by the prisoner using the Kiosk system which is available on every wing.

Additional information: There is a staffed Visitor's Centre with a Canteen and Children's Play Area.  Visitors should allow sufficient time at the beginning of their first visit for details to be taken and also if they are handing in property. The Visitor Centre number is 0161 817 5630.

How to get there:HMP Manchester is located one mile north of the City Centre.

Bus: Numbers 134 and 135 from Manchester City Centre travel along Cheetham Hill Road, four minutes’ walk from the prison.
Train: Manchester Piccadilly or Manchester Victoria are the nearest stations. From Victoria: The prison can be reached by either a five minute walk or taxi from Victoria Station. From Piccadilly:(i) Take the Metrolink (Manchester Tram System) to Victoria then as above.(ii) Taxi - ten minutes journey across Manchester city center.(iii) Thirty minute walk. Follow directions for Manchester Cathedral. The prison is five minutes’ walk from the Cathedral.
Car: From South, M6 to Junction 19, A556/M56 signposted Manchester, A56 to Bury. Prison is on right hand side of road half a mile from the city centre.

From North/East/West, M60 Manchester Ring Road (formerly M62) to Junction 17, (A56). Take A56 to Manchester (4½ miles). Prison is on the left before Manchester city centre.
