Preston Prison information
Preston is substantially a Victorian radial prison. Its wings were constructed between 1840 and 1895 on a site occupied since 1790.
The prison closed in 1931, reopened for military use in 1939 and as a civilian prison in 1948.
It became a local prison in 1990.

Reception criteria: Normal reception arrangements: HMP Preston is a category B local prison. It accepts all adult male prisoners including 18-21 year olds from Crown Courts and Magistrates Courts serving Lancashire and Cumbria. Reception receives prisoners Monday through to Saturday. HMP Preston also serves the courts with video court links.
Operational capacity: 750 as of 13th December 2006
Regime: The regime at HMP Preston will strive to provide a structure that encourages prisoners to lead a law-abiding life upon release.
