Independent Monitoring Board

Here you will find details of all IMB Boards who are currently recruiting volunteers. (Refresh your browser to see the latest volunteer vacancies)

As a general rule, applicants should live within an approximate 20 mile radius of the establishment, unless another distance is specified within an individual advertisement below, and should only submit an application form for an ongoing campaign.

Applicants are requested to submit one application form at a time and to not submit further applications for different IMBs until the outcome of the first has been determined.

Applicants can submit their application form by either email or by post.  To avoid confusion, we would ask that you do not submit duplicate copies by post and email

If your are interested in joining the IMB but your preferred establishment is not recruiting at this time, please check this page at regular intervals as new vacancies are added each week.

Person Specification for positions

We are currently looking for new volunteers to join IMBs within prisons to help ensure that proper standards or care and decency are maintained.

Essential criteria

You do not need any special qualifications or experience because we will provide all necessary training and support during a 12 month training and mentoring period. You do need to be enthusiastic and open minded, a natural communicator and possess sound, objective judgment. As long as you are 18 years or over, your background can be as a student, a person of working age or retired.

Time Requirements

The average is around 3 days per month. However, this will vary between IMBs, and each individual vacancy notice above will specify the average time commitment per month for the individual IMB recruiting.  Some flexibility around when you carry out IMB duties may be available but this will depend on the needs of the IMB and the individual.  However, it is possible that at least some of the input may need to be carried out during normal working hours. Further information will be provided at interview.

Remuneration

Unpaid, reasonable expenses re-imbursed.

Additional Information

Inside every prison, immigration removal centres and some short-term holding facilities at airports there is an IMB – a group of ordinary members of the public doing an extraordinary job. IMB members are independent, unpaid and work an average of 3 days per month depending on the needs of the Board and the individual.

Members are the eyes and ears of Ministers and monitor the day-to-day life in their local prison to ensure that proper standards of care and decency are maintained.

We welcome applications from people over 18 and are particularly keen to hear from young people, those of working age and individuals from black and minority ethnic communities since these groups are under-represented on our existing Boards.

If a former IMB Member wishes to re-join the IMB they can do so but there must be a 3 year gap before applications can be made to rejoin any previous IMB they were a member of.

How to Apply

Complete the appropriate application, diversity and reference forms and email IMBrecruitment@justice.gsi.gov.uk. Alternatively, please telephone 020 3334 3265, providing your name and address and we will post an application pack to you.

Please note that application forms received after the published closing date , or any forms received partially completed or incomplete, will not be accepted. Potential applicants should bear this in mind if submitting applications close to or on the last day.

If you are submitting any of the application pack forms electronically, within the Declaration Section of the relevant forms, please type in your name and the date within the signature box.
