The government has passed legislation amending rules on election booklets for the forthcoming London mayoral elections.

The Greater London Authority Elections (Election Addresses) (Amendment) Order 2008 will enable voters to view an electronic format of the election booklet on the GLA website or in any other electronic format that the Greater London Returning Officer may provide. Other changes mean that electors who are registered anonymously will be able to receive the election booklet.

The Order also provided that the candidates must now provide election statements ('addresses') for the booklet by the close of nomination, and candidates who are representing more than two political parties will be able to include a joint description in their election address.

Justice Minister Bridget Prentice made the Order on 25 February 2008, after it was approved by Parliament, and it came into force on 26 February.

The next GLA elections are due to be held on 1 May 2008 and will elect the Mayor of London and the London Assembly, made up of 14 constituency members and 11 London members.
