Probation project creates sensory garden

27 July 2010

Staff from the Wales Probation Trust with offenders working on the sensory garden in Brynmawr

A team of offenders supervised by Wales Probation Trust have helped transform a patch of derelict land into a sensory garden for the local community.

The offenders sentenced to Community Payback have shifted tons of soil, cleared ugly scrubland, laid paths, built walls and planted flower and herb beds.

Councillor Terry Hughes, chairman of Brynmawr’s Millennium Committee, said:

'We really couldn’t have done it without the Wales Probation Trust and the help of the offenders.

'They’ve put in thousands of hours here and the feedback we’ve had from the community is that it’s a huge success'

Mike Mogford, Project Manager for Community Payback in Gwent, said:

'There was nothing here when we started but we’ve prepared all the ground and helped with the buildings, painting and decorating, and done some of the groundwork.

'It’s been a very good project and one that’s provided a lovely garden area that can be enjoyed by all sections of the community.'
