The Queen's speech

Queen Elizabeth

06 November 2007

The Queen's speech today announced the Government's forthcoming legislative programme.

The Ministry of Justice will be taking forward three areas of legislation:

  • The Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill will take forward the Government's criminal justice agenda by reducing re-offending, protecting the public, promoting justice, improving access to justice and increasing confidence in the justice system.

  • The Constitutional Renewal Draft Bill will be brought forward to strengthen the relationship between Government, Parliament and the people. The Draft Bill will set out proposals to implement commitments in the Government's Green Paper The Governance of Britain (July 3) requiring legislation.

  • Political Party Funding and Expenditure Proposals will be brought forward. The Government is committed to a fair and transparent system of political party funding that does not disadvantage any party. It is now considering what steps to take next, including how to restore public confidence by tackling the spending arms race.
