Peeling back recent renovations to reveal an historic world-class building continues until the end of 2007.
Major building work at Middlesex Guildhall, the site of the UK's first supreme court began on 13 June 2007 and will continue until the end of the year. The historic building and original internal fittings are being carefully preserved during renovations, which will continue until 2009. The creation of a world class building for a world class institution will underscore the independence of the judiciary from Government, while emphasising the focus on justice, truth and democracy.
Stone cleaning of the gothic façade has begun and will continue until the end of year. To reduce disruption to Parliament Square, an external scaffold and wrap is now in place.
Within the building, large public spaces between the court rooms are being cleared to allow in light and improve the appearance of the original stained glass windows and wood panelling. The renovation will restore the building to its original grandeur, as additions from the 1980's are being peeled back and removed to reveal original features, such as ornate ceilings. The historic integrity of this important building is being preserved while a modern functional and publicly accessible court space is created.
The UK's first supreme court is expected to open in October 2009.
The works remain on target and on budget.
