‘Unlocking Potential’ working with Young People

Jeremy Wright sees first hand the positive work done by ‘Unlocking Potential’, a project funded by Chelsea FC and the Premier League to steer young people away from crime.
The programme targets vulnerable young people by offering them the chance to develop footballing skills, receive career and life advice from a targeted youth advisor, as well as the opportunity to take part in peer-mentoring by the Chelsea Foundation.
Justice Minister Jeremy Wright said:
‘I am particularly grateful that Chelsea, the Professional Footballers’ Association and the Premier League are taking an interest in the future of our young people. This scheme is about persuading young people to take the right path. Prevention is always better than cure, and this is a good scheme in promoting those two crucial halves of the game - rehabilitation and prevention.’
The programme currently works with 80 youngsters a week, with the aim being that they will either become volunteers for the Chelsea Foundation or move on to gaining educational or vocational qualifications.
