Justice minister praises work of galleries of justice

David Hanson

01 August 2007

Justice minister David Hanson today visited the Nottingham Galleries of Justice to see the work of the National Centre for Citizenship and Law (NCCL).

He saw some of the schemes the Galleries run to help prevent offending by encouraging socially excluded young people to participate in programmes.

Justice Minister David Hanson said,

"My job is to ensure that we stop offending and prevent re-offending. Working with, and educating young people about alternatives to crime is vital if they are to keep out of trouble.

"The NCCL provides education and training that is key to preventing offending. "

The aim of the NCCL is to provide programmes of education to help young people understand the law and how to live with it.

Current projects include:

ARC (Actively Reducing Crime)
A programme designed to engage schools and communities in crime reduction; empowering children and young people to make a difference and tackle crime.

ARC: Why Guns and Knives?
Using ARC to teach children and young people, from an early age, about the harmful consequences of carrying a knife or gun; to help them to understand the outcomes of their actions and the impact that they can have on other people.

RIZER.CO.UK
A website developed by the NCCL working with partners from the voluntary and statutory sector and young offenders, as an initiative to help deter young people from a life of crime and improve their understanding of the Criminal Justice System

Recycle Youth Project - a 12-week universal youth work programme that focuses on supporting young people to help re-integrate them into education, employment or training.
