£1.25million for victims of sexual violence and abuse

Gerry Sutcliffe MP

22 June 2007

Over £1.25million has been awarded to groups working with victims of sexual violence and abuse, Justice Minister Gerry Sutcliffe announced today.

The Victims Fund grants were awarded to regional and national support projects offering advice and help to female, male, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and black minority and ethnic victims of sexual violence and abuse.

In the past four years, the Government has invested £6.25 million in supporting sexual violence and abuse victims for the first time the money comes directly from the Victims Surcharge.

Justice Minister Gerry Sutcliffe said:

"Sexual violence and abuse is a despicable crime leaving its victims with severe physical and emotional damage and often a reluctance to report or seek justice.

"These projects play a vital role offering the support and advice to victims, helping them through the difficult recovery stage and easing their way through the criminal justice process.

"We need to invest in the victims and put them at the heart of the criminal justice system and I am delighted to announce this year's grant of £1.25million to these projects that offer hope and help to the victims of this abhorrent crime."

Home Office Minister Vernon Coaker said:

"Sexual violence and abuse are vile crimes that have a devastating impact on the lives of victims and their families. That is why the Victims Fund is so important.

"Crime and violent crime have fallen by a third in the last 10 years but I recognise we have to constantly strive to improve community safety and enhance the support we provide to victims."
