Retirement age for recorders and other fee paid judges to be raised

Judge in Court

26 February 2008

The retirement age for Recorders, Deputy High Court Judges, Deputy District Judges, Deputy Masters and Registrars is to be raised from 65 to 70, the Lord Chancellor announced today.

Jack Straw has reviewed the policy and made the changes with the agreement of the Lord Chief Justice. This brings the retirement age into line with the statutory retirement age for most judicial posts.

Notes for editors

  1. It has been the Lord Chancellor's policy since 1998 that Recorders, Deputy District Judges, Deputy High Court Judges, Deputy Masters and Registrars should retire at 65 instead of their statutory retirement age of 70.
