Jack Straw announces emergency measures on witness anonymity

Justice Secretary Jack Straw has today outlined plans for emergency legislation to allow witnesses to give evidence in court.

Mr Straw told Parliament that he hoped to bring in a Bill next week and that it will be debated in all its stages in the House of Commons the following week.

The move follows a Law Lords ruling last week that there was not sufficient authority in common law to provide for the current arrangements for the admission of anonymous evidence. The Law Lords said this was a matter for Parliament to deal with.
