Local variations in sentencing in England and Wales

This study describes geographic variation in custodial sentencing in England and Wales for the period 2003 to 2006, and the possible reasons for it.

It demonstrates that variation in sentencing practices across the Criminal Justice Areas cannot be explained by differences in the make-up of sentencing caseloads.
