Rome I - should the UK opt in?

Open date: 02 April 2008

Close date: 25 June 2008

The Rome I Regulation provides rules to determine which law applies to contracts that have connections with more than one country, such as cross-border business or consumer contracts.

The consultation paper considers the merits of the Rome I Regulation against its predecessor, the 1980 Rome Convention, and recommends that the UK opt in to the new Regulation and apply equivalent rules between England and Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
