Fifth periodic report under the international covenant on economic, social and cultural rights
Date: 27 July 2007
The government ratified the ICESCR in 1976 and agreed to provide periodic reports to the United Nations on the progressive realisation of the rights contained in the covenant.
On 12-13 May 2009 the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights examined the United Kingdom on its fifth periodic report (which covers the UK, the Crown Dependencies and the British Overseas Territories) and its response to a list of issues, and published a set of concluding observations and recommendations.
The UK government has published an initial response and is now considering how to take forward the committee's recommendations. The UK is due to report to the committee at the sixth periodic review in 2014.
