Legal aid funds the provision of legal advice and representation for people who would otherwise be denied access to justice because they could not afford to pay. We are responsible for legal aid strategy and our priority is to ensure a legal aid system for clients that is sustainable and delivers value for money for taxpayers.
We work closely with the Legal Services Commission, which is the public body responsible for administering legal aid in England and Wales. It delivers legal services through two schemes: the Community Legal Service and the Criminal Defence Service.
