Role of prison officer: response to Justice Select Committee report

Date: 14 January 2010

Inside a prison

The government's response to the Justice Select Committee report on the role of the prison officer.

We welcome the committee's report. The response explains how we are managing the pressures of increased prison numbers. Prison officers have helped to meet key performance targets for 2008/09, and achieved substantial reductions in reoffending for those serving longer-term custodial sentences.

We place great importance on the prison officer's role in forging supportive relationships with prisoners. The report outlines government investment in training and our support for officers completing the vocational qualification in custodial care.
