Administrative justice and tribunals

The Ministry of Justice aims to improve the way in which disputes over administrative decisions affecting individuals and disputes over employment rights are dealt with. Our main focus is on tribunals, which hear cases of many kinds, including asylum and immigration, benefits, tax, war pensions, mental health and discrimination.

The Ministry is responsible for processing tribunal cases and providing information and support to appellants, parties, witnesses and legal practitioners. In partnership with the judiciary, we are unifying and modernising the tribunal system, with the biggest reforms for 50 years. We are working with decision-making departments to reduce the need for appeals.

The Administrative Justice & Tribunals Council (AJTC) is an advisory non-departmental body whose purpose is to keep the overall administrative justice system under review. Our aim is to help make administrative justice and tribunals as accessible, fair and effective as possible.
