Placing young people in custody

The YJB is responsible for placing children and young people, under-18, remanded or sentenced to custody.

In all cases, following consultation with YOT and / or local authority staff, the YJB decides which establishment a young person is sent to, based on their:
  • age
  • individual needs
  • risks and personal circumstances.

Placement information form

The Placement Information Form (PIF) is the only document that the YJB Placement Service uses to determine the most suitable placement for a young person entering the secure estate.

It is to be completed by YOT staff and sent to the YJB Placements Service via Connectivity.
YOTs should refer to the guidance document when completing the form.

This Word version of the form is provided for reference, and for use in exceptional circumstances, for instance when a case management system is unavailable.

Bail Package Recommendation form

The Bail Package Recommendation form can be used when a remand to local authority accommodation is being considered.

This form is not built into YOT case management systems and is not required to be sent to the YJB.

The intention of the form is to assist in preparing and presenting bail options to the court. It does not replace the Bail Asset.

Post Court Report form

The one-page Post Court Report form should be completed by the YOT officer at court.

This MUST be passed to the allocated establishment and YJB Placement Service via connectivity.
