HMP Thameside is a modern category B prison in south-east London, situated near the former British armed forces site on the south bank of the River Thames. The prison is operated by Serco UK and Europe.
HMP Thameside opened on 27 March 2012 providing 900 prisoner places. In February 2015, a new unit was opened creating 332 additional places.
HMP Thameside provides a safe, secure and respectful environment that encapsulates a wide range of constructive activities. The regime embraces work, education, accredited course work, health, education and it will provide appropriate offending behavior courses. The staff will also do the best they can to ensure those prisoners going back to society have robust resettlement opportunities through strong community links.

The prison accommodation is made up of two houseblocks.
Houseblock One is primarily CAT B remand and short term convicted prisoners; it has 600 cells (including 18 disabled) for occupancy of 900 prisoners; there are 5 wings: A, B, C, D and E which form upper and lower units and include an Early Days Centre; IDTS (drug stabilisation unit), Foreign Nationals Unit, Older Prisoners Unit and SRU.
Houseblock Two is primarily a CAT C residential unit and has 217 cells (including 2 disabled) for occupancy of 323 prisoners; there are 2 wings: H and J which form upper and lower units including IDTS and Enhanced.
In total there are 14 residential units across the two houseblocks. Offices and treatment rooms are also built in to the houseblock cores. The prison is the first in the world to be awarded, “Outstanding” for BREEAM (an environmental assessment method). Further facilities include a 20 bed Healthcare In-Patient facility and capacity to hold 18 in the Care and Separation Unit. All cells are fitted with sanitation and shower facilities, TV’s, telephones and an in-cell technology that prisoners can use to access healthcare, education, visits, gym, and other services available to them within the prison.
Normal reception arrangements: HMP Thameside is a local male prison; it accepts all suitable prisoners from courts in its catchment area.
