Learning & Skills

Consisting of classrooms located on the second floor, with well equipped Training Kitchen, Computer room, Hairdressing Salon, Key Skills Workshop. There is an extensive curriculum covering Basic Skills to Higher Education, Open Learning courses and Multi-skills courses, also a range of evening classes available.

Vocational Training

This is provided by the Learning and Skills Department. Purpose-built Vocational Training centre offering City and Guilds and Open College Network in Woodcraft, Bricklaying and Plastering. Laundry, Vision Aid, Cleaners, Stores, Gardens, Recycling, Painting and Kitchen party meet the needs of the establishment.


A part- time Doctor and 5 nursing staff cover Usk and the nearby Prescoed Open Prison. Dental sessions are held weekly and optician and chiropody sessions each held on bi-monthly basis. Mental Health Needs are met by an ‘in – reach' mental health nurse.

Offending Behaviour

Usk provides a range of sex offender treatment programmes such as the Core, Adapted, and Extended Sex Offender Treatment programmes as well as ETS. Programmes are co-ordinated by an area programme lead and delivery of treatment is managed locally by a Senior Officer. A list of current programmes is available from our programmes department. The SOTP takes between 5 and 7 months to complete and the ETS 8 weeks. The Healthy Sexual Functioning Programme is also run at HMP Usk.

Gymnasium & Sports

One PESO and 3 PEIs serve both Usk and Prescoed. There is a well equipped, reasonably sized Gymnasium with an activity based programme designed to meet all needs. An impressive outdoor facility has recently been opened with gym activities being generally well attended and popular. OCN courses are provided to those that are interested in various sporting activities.


Full time Catholic in Wales, Part time Roman Catholic and Methodist ministers serve both Usk and Prescoed. There are attractive chapels, but no permanent Minority Faith Room. Imam and ministers of other faiths visit when necessary. Main services Sunday morning and weekly programme of religious groups and meetings.
